The Makita DTD171 is a new makita impact driver for 2020, and their current flagship impact driver. This is currently the most powerful impact driver by Makita, it has more torque than its predecessor, powerful brushless motor, twin bright LED lights and the bearings inside have been upgraded from needle bearings to ball bearings, to minimise chuck wobble, especially with long bits.

This Makita comes with some new functions, it has a control panel that allows you to adjust this impact driver to some very handy pre-settings.

There is a 4 stage assist mode which does the following:

  • Assist Mode for Wood Applications – When driving into wood, it starts off slow to help avoid the screw from falling or "screw cam-out" at the beginning of the driving, and gives you more control. Once the tool has to use the impact function, the speed increases to maximum capacity.
  • Bolt Mode – This mode is to stop bolts and nuts falling off. In reverse it has an auto stop feature, it detects when the bolt is loose, and stops before the bolt is about to fall off, this stops it from falling off and dropping on the floor.
  • T-Mode 1– This is for driving self-drilling screws into thin metal sheets. This mode drives the screws at high speed, then stops when the impact function is required.
  • T Mode 2 – This mode is for driving self-drilling screws in to thicker metal plates. It does the same as Mode 1, but uses enough power to make sure the screw does not break or strip.

The DTD171 has the following 4 pre-set speeds:

Max

  • No Load Speed: 3,600
  • Impacts Per Minute: 3,800

Hard

  • No Load Speed: 3,200
  • Impacts Per Minute: 3,600

Medium:

  • No Load Speed: 2,100
  • Impacts Per Minute: 2,600

Soft:

  • No Load Speed: 1,100
  • Impacts Per Minute: 1,100

The DTD171 comes with a quick mode switch function button above the trigger, this allows you to quickly switch between two modes on the control panel. If you are doing repetitive work, and using two of the modes often, rather than using the control panel, you can program that button above the trigger to switch between the two modes you require.

As you can see, the DTD171 is a big upgrade from the DTD154, it has more power, more functions to help make your job easier and some of the hardware upgraded. If you are looking for the latest and best Makita impact driver, this is it.
